Amalgam restorations are silver or black looking restorations that have been used to restore teeth after the removal of decayed or damaged tooth structure.  

Amalgam restorations have been under scrutiny due to their mercury content and inability to immediately seal the tooth structure (with amalgam restorations, it is the corrosion product that eventually attempts to seal the micro gaps between the amalgam restoration and tooth structure over time).  

Not all amalgam restorations need to be removed (unless desired by the patient).  If amalgam removal is indicated, the utmost in patient protection protocols is employed.
